Đurđevi stupovi – St. George Monastery

Photo: By Geograf208 – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0

The Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery (Serbian: Манастир Ђурђеви ступови, romanized: Manastir Đurđevi stupovi, lit. “Pillars of St. George”) is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located in the vicinity of today’s city of Novi Pazar, in the Raška region of Serbia.
The monastery is located near Novi Pazar, on the top of a prominent elevation covered with woods. It was erected in ca. 1170 as an endowment of Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, dedicated to St. George; it is known as the “Pillars of St. George”. The monastery is exceptional not only for its position and significance it had according to medieval chronicles and manuscripts, but also for its particular architecture. It was named after the church dedicated to St George and its two former bell towers, two high towers – pillars (old Slavic language- stolp, stub). Namely, according to Stefan the First-Crowned, Nemanja had built this church to commemorate his gratitude to St. George for saving him from dungeons-caves where he was put by his brothers.

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (Serbian: Црква светих апостола Петра и Павла / Crkva svetih apostola Petra i Pavla), commonly known as Church of St Peter (Црква Светог Петра / Crkva Svetog Petra) or simply Peter’s Church (Петрова црква / Petrova crkva) is a Serbian Orthodox church, the oldest intact church in Serbia and one of the oldest ones in the region, situated on a hill of Ras, the medieval capital of the Serbian Grand Principality (Rascia), in Novi Pazar, Serbia. Kumanica Monastery

Photo: By Milesevac – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0,

The Kumanica Monastery belongs to the Eparchy of Mileševa of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is located on the territory of the municipality of Sjenica, Serbia, in the village of Vrbnica in the valley of the river Lim, next to the railway line and the main road, on the border of Serbia and Montenegro. Monastery was ruined and abandoned for a long time, but it was restored and consecrated on November 12, 2000. It represents an immovable cultural asset as a cultural monument.
The first written mention of the monastery dates back to 1514. Kumanica was mentioned at two places in the Kruševo document. In the ruins, parts of slabs have been preserved, which are reliably claimed to date from the end of the 13th to the middle of the 15th century, but the area on the north side of the monastery was destroyed during the construction of the railway, so a more reliable dating of the original church is impossible. It is assumed that the golden age of the monastery’s life was in the second half of the 16th and during the 17th century. In the nearby village of Vrbnica, the monastery had three fields in its possession.
